In her speech before the plenary, the Namibian representative denounced Cuba’s inclusion on Washington’s State Sponsors of Terrorism list.
On this issue, she called for Cuba’s removal from the list since there is no justification for its continued inclusion on it.
During the debate on Cuba’s draft resolution, entitled “Necessity of ending the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States of America against Cuba,” the Namibian representative recalled that more than 80 percent of the Cuban population was born under the effects of the blockade.
Consequently, she pointed out, it is imperative that the Cuban people can enjoy the progress of their nation.
She recalled that recently, Namibian President Hage Geingob said that if the US sanctions against Cuba, which he described as inhumane, were lifted, the quality of life and social progress of the Cuban people would improve.
The failure to implement the United Nations resolutions against the blockade, she said, continues to erode the principles of multilateralism and contributes to undermining the credibility of the United Nations.
Finally, the Namibian representative urged the international community to achieve the objective of lifting the US blockade.
After recalling how Cuba stood by the people of Namibia in their struggle for independence, she urged Washington to start talks with Cuba based on the equality of States and respect for sovereignty in pursuit of a better future for both nations.
