Israeli lawmaker condemns ethnic cleansing in West Bank

Tel Aviv, Oct 31 (Prensa Latina) Israeli legislator Ofer Cassif denounced the ethnic cleansing promoted by Jewish settlers in the occupied West Bank, where attacks against the civilian population have intensified in recent weeks.

The left-wing parliamentarian criticized, on social networks, the recent incursions by Jewish extremist groups against a number of Palestinian towns. “Ethnic cleansing must not be allowed to take place in the West Bank” warned the deputy for the Hadash party and defender of the creation of a Palestinian state and the end of the occupation.

Cassif harshly criticized the Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip and advocated dialogue to achieve peace.

Last week, he questioned the state of police imposed in Israel by the Government of Benjamin Netanyahu with the argument of protecting citizens after the declaration of war against the Palestinians. “Ban on demonstrations, brutal police violence and persecution of any voice for peace: the world must know about the dictatorial police state that is emerging in Israel under the smoke of war,” he wrote.

Days before, he said that the Executive’s decision to deport 1.1 million Palestinians from the north of the Strip and attack them is a war crime and against humanity. “Deporting civilians from their homes (ethnic cleansing) is a war crime, shooting at civilians fleeing to save their lives from the terror of ‘purification’ bombs is a crime against humanity,” he stressed.

He also condemned the threats of the Minister of National Security, Itamar Ben Gvir, to deport critics of the military campaign against the Gaza Strip. “The racist and failed commissioner (…) allows himself to call, with all his insolence, for the deportation of opponents of the war in Gaza”.

This month, Cassif denounced the decision of the Knesset Ethics Committee to suspend him for 45 days after an interview in which he accused the Government of wanting the current wave of violence. He also stated that Israel bombs the Gaza Strip to “implement a fascist plan” devised by Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, who, like Ben Gvir, is known for his anti-Arab and far-right positions.

Earlier this year, Cassif was temporarily suspended after calling legislator Almog Cohen, member of the far-right Jewish Power party, Nazi, stupid and bloodthirsty.
