One dead and 45 injured in explosions in southern India

New Delhi, Oct 29 (Prensa Latina) At least one person died and 45 others were injured today in the Indian state of Kerala as a result of several explosions during a religious congregation in the city of Kochi.

According to preliminary information, at least two thousand people were in the Kalamassery convention center during a Jehovah’s Witnesses prayer meeting when the explosions occurred.

The injured were taken to Kalamassery hospital and other medical institutions in nearby areas.

Local newspaper Mathrubhumi reported in its website the government issued a statewide alert and the bomb squad and canine squad arrived at the scene to investigate for more possible explosive devices.

Efforts were also made to extinguish the fire caused by the deflagrations.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke with Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan to take stock of the situation and offered all possible assistance to clarify the situation.
