Brazil’s Supreme Court charges another seven with coup attempt

Brasilia, Oct 27 (Prensa Latina) The Supreme Federal Court (STF) will begin a new trial of seven other defendants accused of the coup acts that took place last January 8th in Brazil.

The defendants were arrested during the attacks on the buildings in the Praça dos Três Poderes in Brasilia and accused by the Attorney General’s Office of the Republic for the crimes of violent abolition of the Democratic State of Law, coup d’état, armed criminal association, qualified damage and deterioration of demolished assets.

Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the STF, authorized on Wednesday sharings with the ongoing investigations in court, all the evidence and the final report of the Parliamentary Investigation Commission (CPI) on the anti-democratic episodes.

According to De Moraes, the report reveals the attempts against democracy by the digital militias, in addition, the Federal Highway Police and the central intelligence body joined “as serious instruments of attacks on the electoral system and its institutions.”

According to the minister, the CPI investigated the attempts to obstruct the elections, the road blockades, coup camps, the presence of paramilitary groups, on the night of December 12th, and the attempted attack on the airport on December 24th.

“The CPI investigations analyze these connections with the events of January 8th, 2023, and the criminal invasions of the headquarters of the Three Powers of the Republic,” the Minister stated.

According to De Moraes, the exchange of information must take place because “the understanding of the Supreme Federal Court is peaceful, regarding the possibility of sharing information elements collected in the area of investigation to instruct another criminal procedure.”

The final text calls for the prosecution of 61 people, including former president Jair Bolsonaro (2019-2022).
