Electoral justice in Brazil resumes trial against Bolsonaro

Brasilia, Oct 26 (Prensa Latina) Brazil's Superior Electoral Court (TSE) will resume the trial of actions against former president Jair Bolsonaro for his illicit conduct during the Independence Day celebrations on September 7, 2022.

The analysis in court is extended to his then vice presidential candidate in last October’s elections, reserve general Walter Braga Netto.

Bolsonaro and Braga Netto are accused in this case of abuse of political and economic power, misuse of media and misconduct to benefit their candidacies in official acts of the bicentennial of the emancipation of Portugal.

Last Tuesday’s session, which will resume this Thursday and may be extended until October 31st, was marked by the arguments of the prosecution and defense lawyers, in addition to the Electoral Prosecutor’s demonstration for the conviction of the far-right politician.

In the actions, the Partido Democrático Trabalhista and Senator Soraya Thronicke request the disqualification of Bolsonaro, in addition to the application of fine for using the Independence commemorations to promote his re-election.

During the hearing, the electoral attorney general, Paulo Gonet, affirmed that Bolsonaro committed abuse to obtain an electoral advantage and also reproached the use of the Armed Forces.

As for lawyer Tarcisio Vieira de Carvalho he rejected the accusations and insisted that his client did not use the September 7 celebration for his candidacy.

In June, the former president was sentenced by the TSE to ineligibility for eight years (until 2030) for abuse of political power and misuse of the media, for attacking the electronic voting system in a meeting with foreign ambassadors in July 2022 at the Alvorada Palace (official residence of the Presidency).
