Addressing the 147th Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly on Action for Peace, Justice, and Solid Institutions, the Cuban legislator stated that her country supports the urgent call made by United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to end the evil of war.
During the general debate held at the headquarters of the Angolan National Assembly, Mari Machado called for an immediate ceasefire globally and abandon sanctions that could harm countries to respond and find solutions to their problems.
She stressed that remaining silent and being trapped in the procedural mechanisms of the IPU is not possible; “the loss of innocent Israeli and Palestinian lives hurts,” which is why Cuba “calls for the ending of warmongering rhetoric and reiterates its support for a just and lasting solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.”
The lawmaker stressed that the current situation is “a consequence of 75 years of illegal occupation and violation of the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people on their territory.
Achieving peace and justice will not be possible as long as the most powerful nations do not comply with their commitments to international disarmament control instruments and stop cyberspace militarization, coercion, and unilateral sanctions, she said.
Mari Machado reaffirmed the Cuban parliamentarians’ commitment in building a better world, which is “possible, necessary, and urgent for human survival.”
