Robert Fico takes office as Prime Minister of Slovakia

Prague, Oct 25 (Prensa Latina) The leader of the left-wing nationalist party Smer, Robert Fico, took over as head of the Slovakian Government after winning the elections on September 30, it was reported on Wednesday.

His administration will focus on ending military support to Ukraine and fighting illegal migration, according to his words.

Never in modern history an executive received a country in such state, with shattered public finances and such a situation of poverty, Fico said about the effects of inflation, energy crisis and the economic situation in a country of 5.3 million inhabitants.

The veteran politician, 59, took advantage of the discontent generated among the poorer classes and in the rural environment by inflation, the fall in the purchasing power and the erratic management of the former center-right coalition, which lost a motion of censure last December.

The new head of government already held that position for three legislatures (2006-2010, 2012-2016 and 2016-2018) and will now rule in coalition with another group that defines itself as social democratic, The Voice (Hlas), as well as with the far-right Slovak National Party (SNS).

Together the three political forces have 79 seats in a Parliament of 150 deputies.
