Inflation unleashes absolute poverty in Italy

Rome, Oct 25 (Prensa Latina) Resulting from galloping inflation, absolute poverty affected in 2022 some 5.6 million people in Italy, 9.7 percent of the total population, with an increase in relation to the 9.1 percent points reached the previous year, a report indicated today.

A report released by the National Institute of Statistics (Istat), pointed out that in that period analyzed 2.18 million families were in this situation, 8.3 percent of the total, higher than the 7.7 points of 2021, a worsening motivated by the strong rise in inflation.

Among families with at least one foreigner, the incidence of absolute poverty was 28.9 percentage points, while among those consisting only of Italians, only 6.4 points were reported, which shows a significant gap that affects 1.27 million minors, 13.4 percent.

In the southern regions of the country, the percentage of families in absolute poverty was pegged last year at 10.7 percent, while in the northern areas the percentage reached 7.5 and in the central region it reached 6.4.

In terms of relative poverty, it stood at 10.9 percent, with a relative stability compared to 11 percentage points in 2021, and 2.8 million families in this European nation suffer from it, the analysis specified.
