Health Director confirms large outbreak of dengue fever in DR

Santo Domingo, Oct 25 (Prensa Latina) The director of the Dominican Health Service, Mario Lama, acknowledged there is a large outbreak of dengue fever in the country and that one hospital is registering up to 140 admissions in a day.

He said this in an interview granted to the program “El día”, broadcasted by Telesistema, where he specified that the Dominican Republic is facing an “epidemic outbreak”, qualified as such because the number of cases reported is higher than expected and the disease is spreading to different areas of the country.

The executive pointed out that PCR tests are being carried out in the busiest hospitals, which is an advantage because there is no need to wait several days for a reliable result, which in this type of analysis is 99,9%.

At the same time, Lama ratified that the Ministry of Health has been working together with other institutions for several months in the process of eliminating breeding sites of Aedes mosquitoes, transmitter of the disease.
