Argentina: UP alliance outlines strategy for runoff

Buenos Aires, Oct 25 (Prensa Latina) Argentina's Unión por la Patria, or United for the Homeland (UP) alliance is strengthening its campaign and outlining its strategy for the election runoff, slated for November 19th.

According to provisional results, UP’s presidential candidate, Sergio Massa, received most votes in last Sunday’s elections (36.68%) and will have to face off against the leader of La Libertad Avanza (LLA) party, Javier Milei, who won 29.98% of the ballots.

After resuming his public agenda, Massa, who is the current Minister of Economy, reiterated that if he becomes president, he will convene a government of national unity capable of preserving the rights achieved, protecting workers, promoting development and renegotiate the agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for the debt of more than 45 billion dollars contracted by former president Mauricio Macri.

The re-elected governor of the province of Buenos Aires, Axel Kicillof, pointed out that there is no time to rest as it is necessary to remain focused on promoting Massa’s candidacy. “The campaign ends when he becomes the next president of Argentina. Nobody stops, we need a government committed to the people, which complies with what the polls ask for and not what is demanded by the IMF,” he stressed.

He also criticized Milei for stating to the press that he will offer ministries to former presidential candidates right winger Patricia Bullrich and Myriam Bregman, of the Left Front and Workers Unity, in an attempt to win votes.

After the results of the first round became known, Milei put aside his speech against what he calls “the political caste” and showed himself willing to cooperate with representatives from different political circles, whom he had criticized and offended on several occasions.

The leader of the Partido Obrero, Gabriel Solano, pointed out in an interview with the Télam news agency that this is absurd opportunism from someone who insistently stated for a year that the left is filth. “With Milei we are not getting even halfway down the block. We do not have the slightest point of agreement. We repudiate and reject that type of calls,” he stated.

According to the Página 12 newspaper, several radical politicians stated that they will not support Milei because he is part of “a fanatical, aggressive and authoritarian right.”
