Palestine calls Security Council’s failures unforgivable

United Nations, Oct 24 (Prensa Latina) The Palestinian Foreign Minister, Riyad al-Maliki, described as unforgivable the continuous failures of the UN Security Council to issue a resolution on the crisis unleashed while Gaza remains besieged by Israel.

International law and peace were worthy of unconditional support by the 15 member countries, he insisted, noting that “more injustice and more killings will not make Israel safer”.

The Security Council and the international community have a duty and obligation to save lives, he demanded during the open debate convened by that body on Tuesday.

“No amount of weapons, no alliance, will bring it (Israel) security; only peace, peace with Palestine and its people,” he said.

The fate of the Palestinian people cannot continue to be dispossession, displacement, denial of rights and death; our freedom is the condition for sharing peace and security, he added.

The Palestinian representative called for avoiding an even greater humanitarian catastrophe and regional contagion.

“It must be clear that this can only be achieved by putting an immediate end to the Israeli war launched against the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip,” he added.

For his part, Israel’s Foreign Minister, Eli Cohen, justified the offensive in response to Hamas attacks on its territory as “a matter of survival”.

This war must also be your war, the representative said.
