UNRWA warns of overcrowding in Gaza shelters

United Nations, Oct 23 (Prensa Latina) The UN Relief and Works Agency in Palestine (UNRWA) on Monday said that as many as 406,000 internally-displaced people remain in 91 of its facilities in Gaza in overcrowded conditions.

The UNRWA shelters were created to house 1,500 to 2,000 people, but amid Israel’s offensive, the average number of IDPs per facility ramped up to 4,400.

The busiest UNRWA shelter houses about 11 times more people than it should be, the spokesman Stéphane Dujarric stated.

Living conditions are becoming increasingly critical in UNRWA schools that have been used as shelters, where up to 70 people are living together in a classroom.

Meanwhile, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported Monday that another 20 trucks crossed into the Gaza Strip from Egypt with humanitarian aid.

Over the weekend, 34 other trucks were able to enter Gaza with humanitarian aids, but the levels barely account for 4% of the average daily volume of commodities entering Gaza prior to this latest crisis.

These deliveries do not include fuel, so UNRWA, the largest humanitarian supplier in the Strip, will deplete its fuel reserves in the coming days.
