Lebanese Foreign Minister begins official visit to Syria

Damascus, Oct 23 (Prensa Latina) The Lebanese Minister of Foreign Affairs and Migrants, Abdullah Bouhabib, began an official visit to Syria, during which he will hold talks with the Syrian government.

A statement reported that Bouhabib was received at the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Damascus by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Faisal Al-Mekdad.

The talks are expected to address current regional and international developments, particularly the Israeli escalation against the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, bilateral relations between the two countries, and ways to facilitate the return of Syrian refugees residing in Lebanon.

The United Nations estimates that there are 865,000 Syrians living as refugees in Lebanon; however, according to the Lebanese Government, the amount is 1.5 million.

According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Lebanon, which is immersed in a political-social and economic crisis, has the highest proportion of refugees compared to its own population (4.5 million).
