In a message published on X, UN Spokesman Stéphane Dujarric confirmed the UN chief’s arrival and announced a press conference on Thursday with Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry.
The visit, announced on Tuesday, is aimed at securing humanitarian access to Gaza and calling for the release of hostages.
Each of my two humanitarian appeals has a value in itself; they are not bargaining chips, they are simply the right thing to do, Guterres said on Wednesday about his requests to Israel and Hamas.
“I call for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire to provide sufficient time and space to make my two appeals a reality and alleviate the epic human suffering we are witnessing,” he stressed.
Too many lives and the fate of the entire region are at stake, he added.
As part of his agenda, Guterres plans to meet with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al Sisi and other stakeholders in the region.
On Saturday, he will participate in the international conference organized by the Egyptian president to discuss the conflict, considered the bloodiest in decades.
