Cuban public health prepares for Family Medicine Congress

Camagüey, Cuba, Oct 19 (Prensa Latina) A delegation from Camagüey province, with the higher hospital infrastructure, is preparing to attend the 3rd Congress on Family Medicine in Havana.

The Congress, which will bring together doctors nationwide during the first week of November, “was an idea of Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro, in an event sponsored by Cuba’s scientific societies,” Lex Cervera, one of the top officials responsible for Primary Healthcare in this Cuban province, told Prensa Latina.

The delegation, consisting of 20 specialists, most of them trained in General Comprehensive Medicine, will participate in the forum with great expectations about a debate that will include symposiums on such issues as the Mother and Child Program, natural and traditional medicine, chronic diseases, and the care of senior citizens.

“It will be the prelude to the 40th anniversary of the Family Doctor Program, to be held on January 4, aimed at improving the quality of life of the Cuban population,” Cervera added.

Cuba, which is going through a complicated economic situation, “does not lose sight that health care is one of the keys to social welfare.”

Its mission will be to defend the principles of prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of any disease in the population,” Alina León, one of the delegates from Camagüey to the Congress, said.
