Guatemalan protesters on new march in defense of democracy

Guatemala City, Oct 18 (Prensa Latina) A demonstration of residents of the northern region of Guatemala will arrive at the capital in defense of democracy and to support the rally of protests in front of the Public Ministry (MP).

Students, farmers, merchants, professionals, community and social organizations have been supporting the sit-in in front of the headquarters of the Public Ministry for the last 17 days to express dissatisfaction with the continuous maneuvers against the elections.

The MP considered an instrument of the corrupt pact, ordered the Supreme Electoral Tribunal to be raided for alleged irregularities in the elections held on June 25th and August 20th.

The president-elect of Guatemala, Bernardo Arévalo, accused Attorney General Consuelo Porras and two of her staff of promoting a coup d’état to prevent his coming to power, scheduled for January 14th, 2024.

Guatemala is experiencing a tense situation, described as unprecedented after hundreds of thousands of people joined the blockade of strategic roads by indigenous authorities on the 2nd of October last.

Faced with demands to dissolve the peaceful protests by the attorney general, businessmen and some politicians, even through the use of force, the police chose to prioritize dialogue with the participants.

However, last Monday organized crime groups attacked road blocks in a series of locations, leaving one dead and at least two injured.

The ancestral organizations assured that they will remain out in the streets until their demands are met, and urged the people to continue raising their voices against the abuses and violations of the MP.
