In an article published by the State-owned news agency KCNA, Kim Kwang Myong noted that Washington is arrogating to itself the right to constantly build up its nuclear arsenal and is even talking about a “preemptive strike” on the pretext that other nations opposed to its designs are strengthening their defense systems.
He pointed out that this is the case of the DPRK, and recalled that the US is dispatching to Northeast Asia sophisticated military hardware, including aircraft carriers and atomic bombers, immersed in the whirlwind of a new cold war.
Kim pointed out that the DPRK, as a responsible owner of nuclear weapons, would continue to strengthen its deterrent defense system and worthily safeguard peace and security in the region and the world without yielding to threats and blackmail.
Last August, the DPRK denounced the US double standards on the implementation of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) before the United Nations and international organizations in Vienna, Austria.
In two statements, Pyongyang denied that its nuclear deterrent system -as alleged by the US and its allies- threatens international peace and security because it has a legitimate defensive nature.
