Syria and Cuba hold talks on higher education

Damascus, Oct 16 (Prensa Latina) The ways to enhance cooperation in the field of higher education and scientific research were at the center of talks between the Syrian Minister of Higher Education Bassam Ibrahim and Cuban Ambassador Luis Mariano Fernandez Rodriguez. At a meeting at the Ministry's headquarters in this capital, the two officials review the current state of cooperation between the two countries, focusing on academic and scholarship exchanges, and benefiting from experiences in the field of scientific research.

Our relations are deeply-rooted and historic, and we have the will to foster them in several fields. We appreciate and thank Cuba for its support for Syria, the Syrian minister said.

He added that it would be beneficial for the two countries to take concrete actions in the coordination between scientific and research centers in Syrian and Cuban universities, participate in scientific conferences, exchange professors and students, and make the most from Cuba’s experience.

The Cuban ambassador, in turn, said that Havana, in spite of all the limitations caused by the United States’ blockade, continues to offer scholarships to Syrian youths, even doubling their number in the current academic year.

The diplomat expressed Havana’s willingness to foster cooperation further and put forward several ideas to strengthen the teaching of the Arabic language for Cubans and the Spanish language for Syrians, as well as the possibility of exchanging teachers and students.
