President Petro bases Colombia’s foreign policy on international law

Bogota, Oct 16 (Prensa Latina) Colombian President Gustavo Petro granted on Monday that his government's foreign policy is based, among other issues, "always and everywhere on international law."

The head of State posted on X that a debate was unleashed Sunday on Colombia’s international policy before and during his term.

In this regard, Petro detailed that Colombia’s foreign policy has been framing in subordinating to any U.S. foreign policies in the last decades, but with worthy exceptions.

Meanwhile, current international policy is based on fighting multilaterally to overcome the climate crisis, the president pointed out.

Similarly, overcoming the narrow framework of the Vienna Convention to cope with the drug predicament. Petro added that his government seeks to open the country to any national or international judicial investigation on human rights violations in Colombia.

Likewise, Petro referred to guaranteeing national independence and applying the constitutional regulation that makes the president, as head of State, the highest responsible for Colombia’s international policy.

Petro’s explanation comes after having marked his stance against Israel’s genocide against the civilian population of Palestine, in the context of the escalation of the conflict between those two nations.
