Government of Colombia and EMC-FARC begin peace talks

Bogotá, Oct 16 (Prensa Latina) The Central General Staff of the former FARC (EMC-FARC) and the Government of Colombia are slated to set up a negotiating table and agree on a bilateral ceasefire.

The Colombian president, Gustavo Petro, demanded “maximum responsibility” from members of the armed group of guerrillas not covered by the 2016 Peace Agreement.

According to the program, the peace delegations of the Government and the EMC-FARC will meet again this Monday in Tibú, North of Santander, in order to formally set up the negotiating table and finalize the bilateral ceasefire.

President Petro called on October 15th to move forward with this process, which will reduce the intensity of the conflict and the number of deaths. He also stated on social media: “The table that can begin a second peace process in Colombia is ready. I expect maximum responsibility from all EMC combatants with the task that is beginning.”

The two delegations met last October 8th, but due to a lack of consensus on some points agreed to postpone until October 16th the talks and the beginning of the national and temporary bilateral ceasefire, which will initially last three months, to be extended later.

Norway, Switzerland, Ireland, Venezuela and the European Union are some of the guarantors of the peace process with the EMC.
