During a conference at Beijing University as part of his trip to China, the head of European diplomacy called for joint work between the two sides despite the differences between their systems.
As he confirmed, the aim of his agenda here is to lower tensions and facilitate relations or ‘at least manage them more effectively’.
In his first visit to China since he took office as High Representative, Borrell pointed out that the international community must agree on universal rules that favor multilateralism.
‘We must prevent the power of the strong from prevailing, the law of the strongest from ruling,’ he commented, adding that Europe is not afraid of a multipolar world, nor it is against the rise of China.
Borrell defended the reform of a system that no longer reflects the world for which it was created and at the same time, he highlighted the value of the United Nations and organizations such as the World Health Organization or the World Trade Organization.
At another point, he pointed out that confidence must be restored in China-EU relations and explained his views on the causes that led to the great bilateral trade imbalance.
During his visit, Borrell co-chaired the China-EU Strategic Talks with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.
