Bishkek, Oct 12 (Prensa Latina) Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in Kyrgyzstan to attend the summit of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), according to the press service of the Kyrgyz presidency.

The dispatch specified that the Kyrgyz president Sadir Zhaparov will preside over the event, which will be held on October 13th in the city of Bishkek.

The president of Russia will meet with his counterpart from Kyrgyzstan to review the state of relations between the two countries and cooperation in military matters and the international agenda.

Putin and Zhaparov are also scheduled to participate in a ceremony marking the 20th anniversary of the Russian air base in the city of Kant, in northern Kyrgyzstan.

The CIS is a supranational organization, which in its beginnings was composed by nine of the 15 former republics of the Soviet Union, with the exception of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, which are currently members of the European Union; Turkmenistan, which left the organization on August 26th, 2005, later became an associate member; Georgia, withdrew on August 18th, 2009, after the Russo-Georgian war of 2008; and Ukraine, which, despite having been a founding state and de facto member, never ratified the organization’s statute.

The CIS currently brings together Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Moldova, which will host out the summit.
