Mexico is confident it will do well in panel on GMO corn

Mexico City, Oct 12 (Prensa Latina) The Secretary of Economy, Raquel Buenrostro, said today that Mexico will do well in the panel on genetically modified corn introduced by the United States under the trilateral free trade agreement (T-MEC).

She argued that this will be the case, since there is no commercial impact and the panelists will solve the issue without the intervention of companies and the U.S. “political cloud”.

She added that Mexico is already more relaxed on this panel issue because all the political part of the United States is removed. There are no companies, such as Monsanto, there will be other types of technical lawyers, and it will be possible to discuss on a more technical level and not in a purely electoral scenario, she said.

She explained that the 2023 decree, which is the subject of the panel, does not have any prohibition and reminded that imports of biologically modified grain are allowed.

Trade is not prohibited, it can be crossed, it is simply, the use of corn for tortillas is not allowed to be transgenic, she said.
