WHO launches roadmap to fight off postpartum hemorrhage

Geneva, Oct 11 (Prensa Latina) Severe bleeding after childbirth - postpartum haemorrhage (PPH) - is the leading cause of maternal mortality worldwide.

Each year, about 14 million women experience PPH resulting in about 70,000 deaths globally. Even when women survive, they often need urgent surgical interventions to control the bleeding and may be left with life-long reproductive disability.

While international developmental partners tend to have similar objectives regarding PPH priorities, efforts are in need of alignment. The Global Summit on Postpartum Haemorrhage (PPH Summit) held 7-10 March 2023 in Dubai, UAE sought to catalyze alignments among experts, promote coalitions, accelerate progress with pledges of support from donors and strong ministry of health commitments to relieve the burden of PPH and eliminate avoidable maternal deaths.

Risk factors include anemia, placental abnormalities and other pregnancy complications such as infections and pre-eclampsia.

The Roadmap to Combat Postpartum Haemorrhage Between 2023 and 2030 was developed collaboratively with stakeholders at the PPH Summit to outline a shared vision for getting back on track towards the SDG target on reducing maternal mortality.
