According to the local media El País, the plane destined for the operation will be one of the Hercules C 130 of the Ministry of Defense and, once in the Spanish capital, the Uruguayans will be flown by commercial airlines to Montevideo.
“We have registered 77 non-resident citizens who requested the possibility of a humanitarian flight, and we are opening the option of receiving new requests”, Foreign Minister Francisco Bustillo said.
More than 22,000 Uruguayans currently live in Israel, the Foreign Ministry of Uruguay said in a statement. Some inhabitants of small communities (kibbutz) in southern Israel were evacuated.
“We are aware of Uruguayans evacuated from Zikim, Ein Hashlosha and Nir Itzhak. All are reportedly safe, in less affected areas,” the Foreign Ministry said.
The number of Israelis and Palestinians killed since the beginning of this escalation amounts to more than 1,800, and several countries are repatriating their citizens due to the complex situation in the territory.
