Last Tuesday, Cuba obtained the highest number of votes in the Latin American and Caribbean region from 146 member states of the United Nations General Assembly, and will join the Council, for the sixth time, during the 2024-2026 period.

According to President Miguel Díaz-Canel, “this is a place earned by practicing solidarity, cooperation, respect for the dignity and the right of all the peoples of the world to live in peace. (…) Cuba has worked tirelessly to fulfill Martí’s hope that ‘the First Law of the Republic be the cult of Cubans to the full dignity’ of women and men, old age and childhood.”

The Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affairs reportedly stated that this ratifies the international community’s recognition of Cuba’s significant advances in the enjoyment of all human rights for all people. It also demonstrates its commitment to the defense of multilateralism and the Charter of the United Nations.

The Ministry also reminded that Cuba, as a founding member of the Council, shows a long history of international cooperation in this area, based on respectful, frank, and open dialogue.

For Cuba, in its capacity as pro-tempore president of the G77+China, that it was elected for the Council has a special meaning, as it supports its defense of the interests of developing countries and efforts for a just and equitable international order, the Ministry stated.
