U.S. will not solve migration crisis with walls, warns activist

Washington, Oct 6 (Prensa Latina) The solution to present migration crisis in the United States does not lie in walls, but in a change in U.S. policies, especially towards the Latin American and Caribbean region, warned activist Gloria La Riva.

“Lift sanctions against Venezuela and Nicaragua, eliminate the unjust and hostile blockade imposed on Cuba, look at Haiti with other eyes than those of intervention, promote development in Central America and then let’s see,” said La Riva in statements to Prensa Latina.

President Joe Biden has let down a large part of those who voted for him, because his migration policy, for example, is a mixture of not acting “and at the same time responds to political pressures because at this moment we are entering the zenith of the electoral campaign”.

“Biden has been attacked from political adversaries and he is concerned about his victory in 2024, that´s why he has started off by reinforcing the southern border wall. It´s not a budget issue, but an issue that elections are drawing near,” she stressed.

La Riva claimed that the migration issue is a double-edged sword, which shows the great hypocrisy of the U.S. government.

I do remember that when President Biden took office back in January 2021 he declared that upon entering the White House he would work on a migration policy and he never did so.

“Some say that Joe Biden does not want the wall or that his government does not want the wall, but what is really important is not what Biden wants or not, but what he is currently doing,” she stated.

Looking ahead to the upcoming elections, La Riva stressed that Democrats are losing ground and, in addition, there is a feeling that he (Joe Biden) let down many people who voted for him.

People are sick of it, there is opposition to the war in Ukraine and the people are questioning the millions of dollars to keep a conflict that should be solved through diplomatic channels without external interference, she added.

The United States faces, perhaps as never before, a high level of polarization and in this regards they have tried to put migrants as major issue and that is not true. “What we must solve, what we must attack is the cause that provokes this migration,” she said.

La Riva argued that among a good part of the citizens of this country there is a lot of insecurity, fear for the future, and she warned that upcoming elections will be a reflection of this same decadence because “how can we witness the repetition on the ballots of the names of Biden and Trump?”

On the one hand, “Trump causing an escalation in racism, and the ultra-right supporting him, and on the other hand, the Democrats with their war, asking for money for the war, and it is a very great danger that we are going through now for a larger scale with unpredictable consequences,” she noted.

Finally, she recalled that “the history of Joe Biden is not that of a liberal politician, it is the history of the right wing in the Democratic Party” and stressed that the belief that this is a progressive force is false.
