The Russian peacekeeping contingent in Nagorno-Karabakh is being deployed based on a ceasefire agreement reached by Azerbaijani, Armenian, and Russian leaders on November 9, 2020.
According to the agreement, time of presence was set at 5 years from the moment of signing the agreement, with an automatic extension for another 5-year period, provided none of the parties to the agreement declared 6 months before the expiration of the term the intention to terminate this provision.
Tension flared up again in Nagorno-Karabakh on September 19 when Azerbaijan announced implementing “local anti-terrorist measures” and demanded the withdrawal of Armenian troops from the region.
Armenia claimed that there were no Armenian troops in the enclave and called what was happening a “full-scale aggression.” Russia called on the conflicting sides to end bloodshed and return to a diplomatic solution.
