The Cuban Foreign Ministry (MINREX) established the position that Haiti needs more and better international assistance and cooperation to get out of the serious humanitarian and security situation that is affecting that Caribbean nation.
This situation is worsening in Haiti due to social instability and poverty caused by centuries of colonial and neocolonial plunder, underdevelopment and foreign intervention, a MINREX statement denounced.
The UN Security Council authorized the deployment of a Multinational Security Support Mission in Haiti, whose troops will use force in their field of action. This is not the first time that the Council has ordered an operation of this kind, although this time it was requested by Haitian authorities themselves.
Cuba is in favor of peace and stability in Haiti, the first Latin American and Caribbean country to revolt against European colonialism, to achieve its independence and abolish slavery in the Western Hemisphere, the text noted.
In this context, Cuba supports the Haitian people’s legitimate right to find a peaceful and sustainable solution to the enormous challenges they face, based on full respect for their sovereignty, the MINREX added.
It recalled that the International Community owes an enormous moral debt to Haiti, and specified that the country urgently requires more financial resources for its development and more and better international assistance and cooperation for its reconstruction.
In this regard, Cub regretted that many of the amounts for material and financial aid committed for development through the UN, in addition to being insufficient to face the effects of natural disasters, were not disbursed or were absorbed for their own expenses by countless non-governmental organizations, foreign governments and program implementation agencies.
For the use of this financing, on many occasions, the will of Haitian authorities were not respected nor did the priorities they established, the Cuban Foreign Ministry denounced.
The text called to address the situation in Haiti with due attention to the structural, economic and social problems, as well as to establish effective aid mechanisms to guarantee the efficient use of international resources for the benefit of the Haitian people.
Cuba adheres to the strategy of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) for long-term development in Haiti, and reaffirms its commitment and support to that nation in public health care, energy, water, education, agriculture and sports, the document added. In that long-suffering Caribbean country, Cuba has maintained, uninterruptedly, a brigade of healthcare professionals and technicians since 1988, which unconditionally supports its people in the face of repeated meteorological adversities, earthquakes, cholera outbreak and the Covid-19 pandemic, the Foreign Ministry recalled on the Cubaminrex website.
