President Chaves urges for cracking down on crime in Costa Rica

San Jose, Oct 5 (Prensa Latina) Costa Rican President Rodrigo Chaves regretted on Thursday the killing of police officer Jeiner Gomez, 41, by a young man on a motorcycle as he was on duty.

On Tuesday evening, in addition to Jeiner´s killing, another police member was injured seriously after a shooting in Tirrases de Curridabat, San Jose.

The incident led to a number of opinions from law enforcement and security authorities in Costa Rica, on the decisions, so far insufficient, on how to curb crime and homicide domestic rates, which already exceeded the statistics of 2022.

Congresspersons joined the meeting to urge the Executive to declare a National Emergency due to crime.

In their arguments, parliamentarians explained that such a statement can provide further economic resources to the different police forces and open a working table where municipal bodies will join as well.
