Diplomacy for peace: UN marks 75 years of political missions

onu-banderas
United Nations, Oct 5 (Prensa Latina) The United Nations (UN) marks Thursday as the 75th anniversary of the establishment of its first special political mission (SPM), which has played a fundamental role in conflict prevention and resolution that caused deaths globally.

The date commemorates the founding of the first of these initiatives to mediate the conflict in Palestine in 1948. Since then, prevention amid tensions has become one of the UN’s vital roles.

Under the theme “Diplomacy for Peace,” a commemorative event will recall at UN headquarters the first steps in one of its founding purposes.

Coordinated by the Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs (DPPA), its current work focuses on five areas: ensuring sound analysis and early warning, preventing conflicts and engaging in peacemaking, managing political crises and violent conflicts, sustaining peace, and enhancing partnerships.

Such missions support dialogue with the Agency’s special envoys in areas of tension such as Yemen, Myanmar, Syria, Western Sahara, and the name dispute between Greece and Macedonia.

Other countries, such as Haiti, Afghanistan, Iraq, Sudan, or the Israeli-Palestinian conflicts and the Colombian Verification Mission, also receive advice and efforts from these programs.
