Digital transformation is progressing in Cuba’s comercial sector

Havana, Oct 5 (Prensa Latina) The digital transformation in Cuban domestic commerce's activities is making progress, despite the lack of equipment and infrastructure from a technological viewpoint, Domestic Trade Minister Betsy Díaz said.

Speaking on national television on Wednesday, the minister explained that more than 20,000 establishments with QR codes were created as payment mechanisms in the commerce network in late September.

Díaz stated that even before the banking restructuring measures were announced in Cuba, the Ministry of Domestic Trade was already working to implement electronic payment channels such as point-of-sale terminals (POS) in building material stores.

She said that once all payments are bank restructured, a regulation will be drafted to demand all individuals and legal entities to carry out commercial activities guaranteeing an electronic payment channel to consumers.

The minister pointed out that there are two fundamental areas in digital transformation: one is e-commerce, and the other is e-government.

During her speech, Díaz highlighted Cuba’s efforts to guarantee the regulated family basket amid severe financial constraints.
