This is the first UNHCR group involved in the voluntary return of refugees to their country of origin, after six years of stay in the province of Lunda Norte.
According to UNHCR, a total of 56,134 refugees remained in Angola until the close of August 2023, 23,265 out of them are from the DRC, including 9,385 belonging to a group that sought protection after fleeing violence in the Kasai region in 2017.
The voluntary repatriation of refugees started off in 2019 but was called off in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, poor road conditions and the bridge over the Kasai River.
