The national reference center for this medical procedure is the Bertha Calderón Hospital, an institution which recently performed three intrauterine surgeries on pregnant women in the departments of Matagalpa, Boaco and Managua, which were qualified as successful.
According to the authorities, the surgeries were performed in response to cases of twin pregnancies complicated by feto-fetal transfusion syndrome and selective growth restriction.
It was known that if left untreated, such conditions could result in serious alterations in the growth and health of the babies.
The Minister of Health, Martha Reyes, explained in an interview with local media several weeks ago, that her country leads the Central American region in the maternal-fetal program and is a priority for the Sandinista government.
Official data show that to date, some 188 specialized surgeries have been performed in the womb, procedures that represent significant advances in Nicaragua’s perinatal medicine, thanks to the family and community health model guided by the Executive.
