Cuba will celebrate the centennial of Italo Calvino in style

Havana, Oct 3 (Prensa Latina) The centennial of the birth of the Italian writer Italo Calvino, on the 15th, will be celebrated in Cuba with an extensive program of activities, confirmed today the ambassador of that nation to the island, Roberto Vellano.

At a press conference at the headquarters of the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (Uneac), the diplomat recalled the importance of the commemoration in this country, where the famous narrator was born and lived until he was two years old.

The representative of Rome in Havana highlighted that the day of tribute in Cuba begins the international celebration for the anniversary that will be accompanied by different cultural actions in Italy and other countries.

In this sense, the president of Uneac, Luis Morlote, highlighted the initiatives that will be developed in this capital from the 11th to the 15th and drew attention to the Italo Calvino Novel Award that the organization has awarded for 27 years.

Professor Mayerín Bello, a specialist in Calvinist work, referred to the discussion and the unveiling of the plaque “Aula Italo Calvino” that will take place on the 11th at 10:00, local time, at the Faculty of Arts and Letters of the University from Havana.

She explained that the conference will include professors Bruno Falcetto, from the University of Milan; Francesca Caputo, from Milan Bicocca University; and María Cristina Secci, from the University of Cagliari, in her opinion great experts on the life and work of the Italian author.

On the 12th, at 10:00, at the headquarters of the Dante Alighieri Society (Callejón de Jústiz, Old Havana) the exhibition “Calvino qui e altrove” will be inaugurated and a protocol for the establishment of the Italo Literary Parks will be signed Calvino in this capital, together with the Fernando Ortiz Foundation.

That same day, at 3:00 p.m., the book “Calvino, Cuba, l’ America Latina”, by researchers Mayerín Bello and Laura Di Nicola, will be presented at Casa de las Américas.

Another of the proposals will be the unveiling, on the 13th, at 12:00, of the plaque dedicated to that figure of letters at the intersection of Italia Avenue –better known as Galiano– and Conde Cañongo Street, where one of the literary parks will be built.

Also that Friday, at 4:00 p.m., at the Uneac headquarters, the award ceremony for the Italo Calvino literary contest will take place, an award that gives prestige to its winners and has been obtained by prominent national novelists, said Alberto Marrero, president of the Uneac.

This will also be a favorable occasion for the presentation of the trilogy “Our Ancestors”, a luxury publication by Ediciones Unión, according to its director Rigoberto Rodríguez Entenza.

Other important initiatives will be the presentation at the traditional literary event Sábado del Libro, on Calle de Madera, in Old Havana, of the novel “Chérie”, by Cuban writer Dazra Novak, 2021 Italo Calvino Prize.

On the 14th, at 6:00 p.m., there will also be a tribute at his birthplace, located at the headquarters of the “Alejandro de Humboldt” Institute for Fundamental Research in Tropical Agriculture, in Santiago de las Vegas, a town on the outskirts of the capital, where His parents, the scientists Eva Mameli and Mario Calvino, worked.
