China to protect dolphin species in serious extinction risk (+Photos)

Nanjing, China Oct 3 (Prensa Latina) China today doubles its efforts in legislation and public education to protect threatened animals, endemic to the Yangtze River, the third most important waterway in the world.

In particular, the finless porpoise is a unique species of freshwater dolphin in China that is receiving the full attention of specialists after its remarkable reduction since 1990 due to human action.

According to Benjamin Ding, an expert from the Nanjing Finless Porpoise and Aquatic Life Conservation Association, the government and the public are increasingly aware of the need to protect these animals.

On a visit to the Yangtze, the specialist showed how they had removed trees, factories, and other constructions on the river banks that were affecting the ecosystem.

“The main basin is about 30 meters deep, the waters are naturally muddy and the flows intense, boats are currently forbidden to pass at high speed and fishing is not allowed either, these are achievements that have been obtained in recent years,” he told Prensa Latina.

According to the expert, with a bit of luck, one can spot some of these creatures when they rise to the surface, but they usually stay deep down where they feel safe.
