President of Colombia to meet with Xi Jinping in China

Bogotá, Sep 29 (Prensa Latina) Colombian President Gustavo Petro announced that he will meet with his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, on October 25th; one of the topics of the meeting will be the future of the Bogotá Metro.

Petro made the announcement at the end of a security council held in the town of Kennedy, in the southwest of the capital.

“We will see what (President Xi Jinping) says about these issues, if he can help us lend a hand to the transformation of transportation in Colombia towards rail and electric power,” Petro added, and announced that they will also discuss other topics.

In October 2019, two Chinese companies – China Harbor Engineering Company Limited (CHEC) and Xi’an Metro Company Limited – were selected in a tender for the construction of the first line of the Bogotá Metro.

The issue of the Metro – whether it is built or not, whether it is underground or elevated – is in the public and political debate given the mobility problems.

According to the Inrix Global Traffic Scorecard, Bogotá was ranked fifth among the 10 most congested cities in the world in 2022 as drivers lost an average of about 122 hours due to traffic jams.

In this scenario, mayors and authorities keep debating on public transportation and the possibility of improving its current situation through the Bogotá Metro.
