Cuba raised voice of the South at UN

Havana, Sep 29 (Prensa Latina) President Miguel Díaz-Canel described his participation in the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly as an opportunity to raise the voice of the Southern nations and break the attempts at isolation.

The president stated on national television on Thursday that during his stay in New York, he defended the interests of the members of the G77+China, in addition to reaffirming Cuba’s will to build socialism and denouncing the unjust economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed by the United States.

Díaz-Canel explained that the Cuban delegation also participated in other side events, such as the Sustainable Development Goals Summit, the High-Level Dialogue on Financing for Development, and Climate Change.

The head of State participated in another meeting about experiences to counteract the impact of future pandemics, where Cuba showed its knowledge with the development of its homemade Covid-19 vaccines.

He added that the Cuban delegation’s presence angered some US Government institutions, as well as the vulgar and demobilized counterrevolution that tried to boycott the agenda. The support from broad sectors of US society was much more visible.

Díaz-Canel highlighted his meeting with representatives of the sports, religious, science, technology and innovation, cultural, and business sectors, and with Cuban residents in the United States, who expressed their willingness to help improve bilateral relations and demanded the lifting of the blockade.

He described as very emotional the tribute he paid at the Memorial built to social activist Malcolm X; the visit to the Church of the Transfiguration, a community founded by Cuban independence fighter Félix Varela; his stay at the venue of the People’s Forum; and his participation in a rally of solidarity with Cuba and Venezuela.

Díaz-Canel pointed out that in order to analyze his participation at the United Nations, it is necessary to refer to the G77+China Summit held in Havana recently.

He noted that in addition to achieving a high level of consensus and participation at the Havana Summit, the delegations acknowledged that the unjust international financial order was the leading cause of the existing South-North gaps.
