The phenomenon is a supposed demonstration of mourning following the death, usually violent, of a local boss or a member of his family, accompanied by fireworks, gunshots in the air, riots and other acts that can paralyze an entire neighborhood.
According to researchers, such actions, which usually last several days, began to take root around the year 2000 and are intended as a show of force to rival gangs or, more recently, to provoke the authorities.
One derivation was to erect mausoleums, presumably in honor of the deceased criminal, in parks, land or public places, which end up becoming centers for the distribution of drugs and other crimes.
In some communities, the risk associated with narco-funerals leads to paralyzing classes in order to guarantee the safety of students and teachers.
During the presentation of the bill, President Boric assured that his government will not allow the naturalization of drug trafficking and its insertion in everyday life.
