Parallel to the 78th UN General Assembly, the head of Cuban diplomacy met with his Sahrawi counterpart, Mohamed Sidati, with whom he spoke about regional and international issues, while ratifying the ties of brotherhood, solidarity and cooperation between the two peoples and governments.
Rodríguez also agreed with his Indonesian counterpart, Retno Marsudi, in the desire to continue to promote the development of joint ties in areas of mutual interest and strengthen multilateral cooperation, according to a message published on his account on the social network X.
The Cuban foreign minister also met with Miguel Moratinos, UN high representative for the Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC), to whom he reiterated Cuba’s commitment to promoting a culture of peace, dialogue and mutual respect in the world, and the defense of multilateralism.
As part of his agenda, Rodríguez spoke on Tuesday at the high-level meeting for the commemoration of the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons, where he ratified Cuba’s will to move towards disarmament in a transparent, verifiable and irreversible manner.
This is and must continue to be a very high priority and a matter of survival, he stressed.
He insisted on Cuba’s support for the efforts to universalize the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, considering progress towards disarmament to be a high priority.
“The threat that nuclear weapons represent for the existence of the human species can only disappear with the total elimination of these arsenals as advocated by the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro,” he added.
Rodríguez recalled that in the last year, the holders of these weapons continued to modernize their arsenals and deployed new nuclear weapons systems, while global military spending reached the scandalous figure of 2.24 billion dollars.
While exorbitant resources are wasted, official development aid commitments are not met and millions of people in the world continue to die of starvation, curable diseases and poverty, he denounced.
