It occurred due to criticism of Warsaw over a scandal involving possible violations in the issuing of visas. Rau said Scholz’s statements violated the principles of sovereign equality of states enshrined in the 1991 Treaty between Berlin and Warsaw.
According to the minister, the German chancellor’s competence does not relate to the ongoing legal proceedings of the nation.
For this reason, Rau asked Scholz to respect Poland’s sovereignty and refrain from making statements detrimental to the two countries’ relations.
In the wake of the visa issue in Poland, Scholz proposed to establish strict controls at the European Union borders, pointing out there are many immigrants from Poland in Germany.
