Ecuador census shows a new face without being free of controversy

censo-ecuador-1
Quito, Sep 23 (Prensa Latina) The announcement of the results of the latest population and housing census in Ecuador marked the week that is about to end on Saturday, not only due to the figures revealed but also the controversy surrounding the methodology.

According to the survey conducted by the National Institute of Statistics and Census (INEC) between 2022 and 2023, the population of Ecuador is estimated to be 16.9 million inhabitants, less than the figure projected for that date.

The research also showed that the population identified as mestizos (mixed race), indigenous, and rustic people has grown in Ecuador, while those who consider themselves Afro-Ecuadorians or white people are less than in 2010 when the previous survey was made. According to those figures, women are the majority, with 51.3 percent, and men account for 48.7 percent.

Provinces with a higher presence of women are Cañar and Azuay, followed by Chimborazo, which coincides with the territories from which more Ecuadorians preferred to try their luck and reach the United States.

Former INEC directors considered that the figures were not reliable and issued a press release in which they requested an audit to be carried out by international universities and not by the same officials of the entity because they would be judges and parties.

On the other hand, while President Guillermo Lasso was in New York participating in the United Nations General Assembly this week, several sectors disagreed with several decrees that the president sent to the Constitutional Court for review.
