China and Syria announce a strategic partnership (+Photo)

Damascus, Sep 22 (Prensa Latina) The governments of the Syrian Arab Republic and the People's Republic of China today adopted a joint statement announcing the establishment of strategic partnership relations between the two countries, media reported here today.

The document was signed and announced after the summit held today between Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad and Chinese President Xi Jinping in the eastern Chinese city of Hangzhou.

According to the announcement, the two sides pledge to continue exchanging firm support on issues pertaining to each country’s core interests and major concerns.

The Syrian side firmly adheres to the One China principle and recognizes that the Chinese government is the only legitimate government representing this entire Asian nation, the text said.

It added that Damascus also recognizes that Taiwan is an integral part of Chinese territory, as well as supports Beijing’s efforts to preserve its sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity.

The text clarified that Beijing firmly supports the Syrian efforts to preserve the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of this Levantine nation, and will stand with the Syrian people to follow the path of development and supports the measures taken by Damascus to maintain security, stability and development.

In the announcement, China rejected the interference of foreign powers in Syria’s internal affairs and everything that affects its security and stability, and repudiated the illegal military presence and the plundering of the Levantine nation’s natural wealth.

In addition, Beijing urged the immediate lifting of all unilateral and illegal sanctions imposed on Syria.

The parties’ commitment to boost friendly cooperation in the fields of economy, trade, agriculture, culture, youth and media was also ratified.
