Over 200 children victims of violent deaths in Ecuador

Quito, Sep 21 (Prensa Latina) Ecuador´s Police Department reported on Thursday that as many as 231 children were reported as victims of violent deaths in Ecuador up to September 13.

Official data from the National Directorate of Investigation of Crimes against Life, Violent Deaths, Disappearances, Extortion and Kidnappings (DINASED) detailed that 38 children and 193 teens have been so far killed in this year.

According to DINASED, 48,92% of these deaths occurred in the so-called Zone 8, made up of Guayaquil, Samborondón and Durán cities, in the province of Guayas.

The Ecuadorian Observatory of Organized Crime explained that 41 people aging 15-19 died in H1 2019, while 246 intentional homicides occurred in the first six months of 2023.

Analysts believe that the high levels of violence and poverty that Ecuador is currently facing up are the main causes of the link between minors and criminal groups operating in the country.
