G77+China demands right to development at the Future Summit

United Nations, Sep 21 (Prensa Latina) Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez on Thursday reaffirmed the need to guarantee the recognition of the right to development for the countries of the Global South on the route to the Summit of the Future in 2024.

Speaking at the preparatory meeting for that event, organized by the United Nations General Assembly, the head of Cuban diplomacy insisted on the right of the Southern States, grouped in the G77+China, to live without having hunger or poverty as a priority.

The path to that noble purpose is indisputably related to the change in the current unjust and exclusive international order, Rodríguez emphasized.

He recalled the effects of existing imbalances that multiply in countries punished by the arbitrary enforcement of unilateral coercive measures. These provisions affect a large group of nations in the bloc, chaired this year by Cuba.

“Whatever the outcome of the Summit of the Future, it will have to urge the States to refrain from enacting and implementing any economic, financial and unilateral measures that violate international law and the (UN) Charter, thus preventing the full economic and social development of developing countries, in particular,” he pointed out.

The event, organized by the United Nations, aims to improve cooperation to face critical challenges and address deficiencies in global governance.

Furthermore, it aims to reaffirm the existing commitments, including the 2030 Agenda and the United Nations Charter, and move towards a revitalized multilateral system that can influence people’s lives positively.

In this regard, the Cuban Foreign Minister warned that the Pact for the Future, a document that will result from the meeting, must be established through open, transparent and inclusive intergovernmental negotiations, taking into account the opinions of all member States and groups of countries.

“We urge all delegations to participate in all negotiations in a constructive manner and to avoid unfair practices, promoted by some member States that seek to impose a kind of veto on others in relation to major issues,” he rejected.

On some of these topics it is not even acceptable to negotiate, although they must be included in the Pact as part of the responsibilities.

The Summit should provide an acceleration platform for the reform of the multilateral system in order to move towards a more just, equitable, united and sustainable world that is directed towards the development and prosperity of all countries, according to the United Nations Charter, Rodríguez stressed.
