The diplomat expressed her government’s concern over the escalation of the situation around Nagorno-Karabakh, where both sides blame each other for attacking the other one, the Sputnik news agency reported.
“We are deeply concerned about the sharp escalation of the situation in the Armenian-majority enclave, but located in Azerbaijani territory.
Reports are coming in about the beginning, as Baku declares, of anti-terrorist activities by the Azerbaijani army and the responses from local armed groups,” she said.
The diplomat added that the Russian peacekeepers continue to carry out their tasks in the area despite the escalation of tension in Nagorno-Karabakh.
Zakharova stressed that the command of the Russian peacekeeping contingent is in constant contact with the representatives of the Armenians in the enclave and Azerbaijani authorities to facilitate a ceasefire and the implementation of the agreements.
The official noted that all the steps for the peaceful settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict are included in the declarations of the leaders of Russia, Azerbaijan and Armenia that were approved between 2020 and 2022.
