Food insecurity persists in Haiti

Port-au-Prince, Sep 19 (Prensa Latina) Forty-four percent of Haitians face high levels of food insecurity as a consequence of gang violence, economic slowdown and meteorological phenomena, the World Food Program (WFP) denounced.

The agency, which recognized a slight decrease in the indices as of August with respect to the previous quarter, warned that emergency levels of food insecurity persist in several regions, while funding is critically low.

According to a report by the National Food Security Commission, 4.35 million Haitians face acute hunger between August this year and January 2024, down 11% from the 4.9 million recorded from March to June.

However, Jean-Martin Bauer, WFP country director in Haiti, warned that without an immediate injection of funds, even more people risk going hungry, which will erode hard-won gains.

He also noted that progress is fragile because of a shortage of funds and an increase in internally displaced persons as a result of the recent wave of violence.
