Fighting off cancer without political distinction, says U.S. expert

Havana, Sep 19 (Prensa Latina) Fighting cancer has no distinctions, regardless of whether it is in Cuba or in the United States, because it is about humanity, according to Robert Winn, Director and Lipman Chair in Oncology at the Virginia Commonwealth University Massey Cancer Center.

After signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Cuba´s Institute of Oncology and Radiobiology, Dr. Winn told the press this moment opens a new opportunity for understanding and collaboration, because we are all amid a fight against cancer.

“It is about bringing health to everyone, regardless of where and how they live, or even how they think,” Dr. Winn stated while expressing his satisfaction with the newly MoU that includes the purpose of sharing with Cuban oncology specialists everything related to clinical trials, particularly with patients from poor U.S. communities with cancer.

The MoU will also make it easier to take advantage of US and Cuban specialists´ knowledge and exchange information and knowledge because we are in the same fight together, Dr. Winn added.

Referring to Cuba-USA dispute, he said that there have never been good times, only a small window of opportunity during Barack Obama’s administration, but as a person of faith he keeps the hope alive that what has been learned in that stage of understanding and reestablishment of relations will be useful for the future.

“It will be good for both countries and peoples. My heart and soul trust in that understanding because we have many things to do. It is very difficult as it was for a country like Cuba to become independent, and it made it,” Dr. Winn stressed.

Luis Martin, Director of the Institute of Oncology and Radiobiology, assured this MoU opens possibilities of cooperation in this specialty and in thoracic surgery, and also in medicine in general, in addition to research.

It will be the possibility to show Cuba´s breakthroughs in health and for academic exchange due to the strength of the Massey Cancer Center of Virginia, a reference in the study and treatment of that disease in the United States.
