Cuban sign language boosts social inclusion

Havana, Sep 19 (Prensa Latina) Cuban sign language is a necessary tool for the exercise of the rights of deaf people by boosting their social inclusion, an expert assured on Tuesday.

Approximately 26,000 people with hearing disorders are members of Cuba’s National Association of the Deaf (ANSOC), Rita Simon Valdes, PhD. and director of the National Center for the Improvement and Development of the Deaf told Prensa Latina.

Cuba has specific schools for deaf children, who attend all compulsory educational levels; in addition to enrolling at polytechnic schools and universities and even MA and PhD programs.

During debates in Cuba’s National Assembly (ANPP), representatives of each of Cuban associations of disabled people participate, Valdes stated.

The specialist stated that a legal norm to establish a legal framework for recognizing and regulating the use of Cuban sign language will be analyzed in 2024 ANPP.
