The agency, one of whose promoters is the World Health Organization (WHO), received “close to USD$ 7.0 million in advance for vaccines against the disease, which must have arrived as soon as possible in Covid-19 emergency times”, the newspaper added.
“The aftermaths of blindly trusting the aforementioned agency are not only economic damage, but also human lives,” the daily assured in its article, “COVAX: 20,000 Paraguayans deaths and a swindled people.”
The agency, co-managed with the WHO by the Gavi Alliance for Vaccines and the Coalition for the Promotion of Innovations for Epidemic Preparedness, “did not comply with the distribution to the point that the first important vaccinated group was because of a donation,” HOY stressed.
“Subsequently, when the emergency no longer existed, Covax sent a tiny batch and a balance of USD$ 5.6 million was left in favor of Paraguay,” the journal noted.
The deadline for the WHO to comply with this agreement expired last September 14, and now Asuncion will resort to international arbitration to claim such money, in memory of the 20,000 deaths from Covid-19, HOY referred.
